As an extra incentive to practice over the Thanksgiving Holidays, students have been given a Practice Challenge! There are 3-4 activities that students can choose from each day. To get an A, students should choose 1 activity from each day's column for a total of 8 activities. Students who go above and beyond and have 10 or more activities completed will win a prize! Of course students can complete the day's activities on ANY day, however, they should be completing one activity out of each column throughout the break. Going out of town? No worries! The chart will be due by December 2nd so students should have plenty of time to complete the challenge! Parents Please Help! Please mark off the activities your child does and sign the challenge chart so they can receive credit. Thanks for your encouragement! 6th Grade Practice Challenge ![]()

7th and 8th Grade Upcoming Events:
Other Notes:
THANKS! I have had a great turn out of 7th and 8th graders to my extra help sessions for the 6th graders. THANK YOU SO MUCH! The older students being so giving of their time, talents, and knowledge is already having a huge impact on the 6th grade. Here’s who is meeting next week, if you are available to come out and help:
You can buy or rent instruments at several local music stores or online. It is important to get a reputable brand from a reputable instrument dealer to insure your student the most success on the instrument and the least amount of time sending the instrument to the repair shop. It is almost ALWAYS better to buy a quality used instrument or rent one then to buy a brand new instrument “cheap”.
Locally we have Alison’s World of Music on Airline Highway and Zeagler’s Music on Florida Blvd. If you decide to purchase, especially if you prefer to shop online, please contact Ms. Codina for specific instrument/website recommendations. Full Instrument Supply List is posted on our website. **Reminder** French Horn, Baritone, and Tuba are school provided instruments, all you need to purchase is the mouthpiece! The specific type is on the Instrument Supply List. Rentals

Brands to look for:
Brands/Features to AVOID (These instruments tend to be so cheaply made they often do not play easily, do not play in tune with the band, and break constantly. Students become very frustrated and are less likely to be successful!):
Special Note for Clarinet and Saxophone Players: Remember to pick up quality reeds in the "blue" box! Get only one box of Vandoren 2 (we will move out of this size very quickly) and a few boxes of Vandoren 2.5's and that should last you the year! Please read this article to find out more about reed care. Don't forget valve oil or necessary cleaning supplies! Music stands are also highly recommended for at home practice. The following websites have informative videos about assembly and playing your first note: www.beginningbandbootcamp.com www.basicband.info Have fun and remember to contact Ms. Codina when in doubt! Please find the results for our instrument selections below. We have taken two weeks and a team of professional musicians to help find the instrument that your child will be most successful on! We are excited to begin playing as soon as possible. Please make every effort to attend the meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at school. We will discuss how to get an instrument. We will also post more information here on the website after the meeting.
Some students may need to switch their band day and their PE day. That is also indicated. We will switch beginning on Tuesday after Labor Day! Looking forward to a great 6th grade class! My thoughts and prayers are with all of the Central Mustang Band Family as we recover from this flood together. I am very much looking forward to seeing all of you and making music together again on Monday!
Thankfully, our band room was safe and dry and everyone who responded to the Remind said their instruments were safe and dry. Please, if you have not responded, let me know if you have an instrument need! If you left your instrument in the band room during the flood, you may pick it up tomorrow (Friday) between 8:00 and 3:00. I know there are many questions you have about returning! Please read on:
Seeing what our Mustangs have been doing out in the community for each other these past two weeks has made the faculty at CMS extremely proud! We truly are #AscensionStrong. As we begin this transition back, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions and concerns! [email protected] If you were not able to make it back to the bandroom during prep day, here are some items you will need to take care of to be ready for the 1st day of band!
We are looking forward to welcoming back our Mustang Band members at Prep Day this year on August 2nd! Don't forget to stop by the band room!

Special Note for 6th Graders: No need to purchase or rent an instrument now! We will go through the instrument selection and try-out process during the first two weeks of school. We will have a 6th Grade Parent Meeting on August 18th at 6:30 p.m. to discuss purchasing/renting an instrument. -- Special Note for 7th & 8th Graders: Yes! Check the website calendar and news section often for important updates! E-mail [email protected] with any questions! The Mustang Band has just wrapped up its first annual summer Band Camp! This week-long day camp was held June 13-17 at Central Middle School. Special guest clinicians and professional musicians were brought in for the week to work with the students. Between music rehearsals, costume contest, talent show, and plenty of activity time, the students had a blast! The band presented a final concert at 4:00 p.m. on Friday for friends and family.
Concert Program:
A BIG THANKS to our Guest Clinicians and Musicians:
Special Thanks to our “Band Moms” this week! Mrs. Yvette Froisy and Mrs. Jessica LeBlanc Congratulations to the Central Mustang Band students that represented us at the Louisiana Bandmasters Association All-Star Honor Bands this week in Lafayette.
Madelyn Volion, Flute Jasmine Jones, Clarinet Ryleigh Cotton, Contra Bass Clarinet Liyah Brown, Saxophone Jadon Shirley, Trumpet Sarah Sloan, French Horn Nathaniel Naquin, French Horn Logan Kern, Trombone Jordan Jones, Baritone The students were selected based on their outstanding achievements in the Central Middle Band Program and performed alongside students from 33 others schools in the state. Congratulations Mustangs! Keep your instruments over the summer, especially to practice! Playing an instrument is like keeping fit for a sport. If we all don’t practice until August, we will be very out of shape and may even forget important concepts! Returning a rental may also void any rent-to-own contracts – check with the store you are renting from on this. Try practicing at least an hour weekly. Students that have school owned horns may sign out their instruments over the summer. What can I practice?
Summer private lessons are very beneficial! Contact Zeagler’s or Alison’s. Lessons are also available at EAHS by contacting [email protected] or [email protected] Come to Band Camp June 13-17!
