The 6th Grade Beginning Band performed this Friday, April 29 at a Band Festival held at Bonnabel High School in Kenner. The festival rates each song the band performs on a scale of 1 to 3, with 1 or "Superior" being the highest rating. The band received top "Superior" ratings on each piece and even received a "Superior Plus" on the piece "Ancient Hunters"!
The festival was held in honor of the founder and coordinator of the Archdiocesan Band Program and Festival for nearly 40 years, Sister Mary Hilary, who passed away in February. She lived her mission of bringing band into the lives of young students through the Archdiocesan Band Program and her Festivals. Her work has shaped the lives of hundreds of students in the New Orleans and Baton Rouge area. Congratulations to our Beginning Band! This performance wraps up a very busy festival season in which all of the Mustang Bands have come home with top ratings! Thanks to the outstanding support of our parents who came out to hear the performance and chaperone today. Special thanks to Mrs. Hills, Mr. Muse, and the faculty and staff at CMS for their support of the band program! You are invited to come out and hear these outstanding bands at our annual Spring Concert, held May 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the CMS Gym. The L.M.E.A. Solo and Ensemble Festival is an opportunity for our young musicians to play a solo or duet for assessment. Students receive a rating of 1 to 5, with 1 or “Superior” being the highest rating. Students receiving a 1 will also be presented with a medal at the Spring Concert on May 18. Having this accolade is a great resume builder and helps the student in the future when applying for the L.B.A. State Honor Band! Students have picked a solo and/or duet to play and have been working on them in class. Students can be shy about playing a solo, but the experience is invaluable for a musician, so we encourage all students to sign up! The Solo and Ensemble Festival costs $5.00 per person/per event (i.e., a student playing a solo AND duet would pay $10.00). We turn this fee into L.M.E.A. who sanctions the event, hires the judge and provides the medals. The festival is tentatively scheduled for Friday, May 13 during elective block, but may expand to two days if enough students sign up. If your child would like to participate, please return the bottom half of this paper with the appropriate fee, due by Friday, May 6. Click below to download the Solo & Ensemble Permission Form. ![]()

Congratulations to the members of the 7th and 8th Grade District Band for receiving "Sweepstakes" Superior Ratings at the District IV Large Ensemble Festival and Assessment in Zachary, LA! The students have been working very hard and rehearsing since January for this performance and we are very proud of them! The band performed three pieces, Skygazer Fanfare by Randall Standridge, When the Wind Whispers by Rob Romeyn, and Serengeti Dreams by Robert W. Smith. A panel of three judges rated the band in areas such as tone, technique, balance, rhythm, musicality, discipline and appearance and all three judges gave the band the highest rating of a 1 or "Superior". The band was also given a piece of music they have never seen before and was judged on their ability to sight-read, in which they also received a 1 or "Superior" rating. These high scores qualify the band to advance to State Festival held at three different regionals throughout the state during the week of April 18-22. Details for this are currently being worked out. Special thanks to the many band parents who helped chaperone and provided hamburgers, snacks, and sweets when we returned to the band room! A list of all of the bands who performed at the festival and their ratings can be found at www.districtiv.org. 2015- 2016 7th and 8th Grade District Band
